ETIAS & UK Travel Authorization: What You Need to Know
Upcoming Travel Requirement for Europe & the UK
Americans, Canadians, and travelers from several other countries will soon need to preregister for travel authorization before arriving in Europe.
Europe (ETIAS – Coming Mid-2025)
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will require most travelers to complete an online registration before visiting EU Schengen countries. The process is expected to be quick, with a small processing fee.
United Kingdom (ETA – Required January 8, 2025)
For travel to the United Kingdom, including layovers at UK airports, an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will be required for U.S. and Canadian visitors starting January 8, 2025. Learn More about ETIAS and UK ETA
Passports: Check Your Expiration Date!
Before booking your next trip, take a quick passport check:
✔ Is it valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date?
✔ Is it undamaged and in good condition?
✔ Do you know where it is?
If your passport is expired or close to expiring, renew it ASAP! Processing times can be lengthy.
TSA PreCheck & Global Entry: Skip the Long Lines.
TSA PreCheck lets U.S. travelers breeze through security at major airports. Enjoy shorter lines and keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on.
Global Entry: If you travel internationally often, Global Entry provides expedited U.S. customs clearance upon returning home.
Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
Stay safe while traveling abroad by enrolling in the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This free service allows the nearest U.S. embassy to contact you in case of an emergency.
Visas
While not all countries require visas for American travelers, many do. Look up your destination:
